In the 15th century, Christian Europeans began making oceanic voyages of discovery. Very quickly, these voyages led to the outright economic, political and religious domination of the globe. This domination lies at the heart of the problems the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia facing today. Continue reading “How the West came to dominate the World. “
‘Do not go extremes in religious matters, for you will not be able to continue in that way’
– Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
Holy lands are indeed sacred and they exist on this earth as sites that are respected and that should be respected, not only by the people who believe in the particular faith but by every one in the civilised world. As people who live by Islamic faith, we have sensitivity over this delicate subject because Islam too has its own proclaimed sacred places. These places belong to every Muslim in world and it is their refutable obligation safeguarding and cherishing those places. The countries that have those sacred places within their geographical areas cannot proscribe Muslims coming to their countries for just about any reason.
Originally made up of citizen volunteers who took up arms against their government and called the Free Syrian Army (FSA), the anti-government military formations in Syria have mushroomed into several hundred groupings numbering a few dozen to over 10,000-35,000 fighters.
Barely 65 years have passed and yet the Olympics, Downton Abbey, The King’s Speech, royal weddings and babies are all being deployed to present us with an idea of imperial Britain and the Windsors as harmless anachronisms, and not the brutal genocidal murderers who plundered, raped, imprisoned and murdered their way across the whole globe. Virtually every conflict today can be traced back to British colonial policies and divide and rule tactics. While we are well aware of the horrors of the Nazis, British concentration camps in South Africa are little known, as are the genocides, famines, displacements and brutalising all over Africa, Asia, Palestine and the Middle East in the name of the British crown. It is no exaggeration to say that 100s of millions of people suffered and died under the rule of this family’s ancestors down to the present day, yet they are paraded in public as though there is no shame in their past and as though they have no blood on their hands at all. And we are allowed no accountability, no anger, as though it never happened at all.
